You don’t need to be some kind of genius to master Twitter, you just have to be yourself. There are a huge variety of ways to market your business by using Twitter. In my business, I have come across a number of client projects associated with Twitter and have experimented and tinkered around with a number of different approaches and techniques, but there is one that I favour over all others.

I think that the best technique is not to have one, actually. I do have one piece of advice for you that I use when I am working on a new client intake and I’m going to show this to you live, so you can see it all as it happens in the video that accompanies this post.

Fundamentally, understand that nobody of any value to your business will give you any consideration or be inclined to interact, unless they know that it’s YOU. I try to stick to a general rule of thumb doing several “Real” tweets, for example answering the question “What’s Happening,” or re-tweeting something from a follower, or re-tweeting a good blog post. At other times, I put some specific business tweets in and send some of my links out there. I try and keep these in perspective however and I never run the risk of boring people with too many business tweets. I find that (1 in 10 – 15) is about the right number.

I wanted to actually show you how being real can really work, so while I’m sitting here writing this now, I am going to go on Twitter and answer the question, “What’s Happening?” Here is my first tweet:

“I’m composing an article about Twitter and I need you to do something for me — if you see this can you send me a tweet back? Would love you forever!!! Thanks!”

Because that’s exactly what’s happening right now. But to adapt this to your own VA business you can say..

1. “I have an opening in my VA practise for a new client, does anyone know of someone who needs help?”

2. “I’m sure there is somebody out there who could use an hour of complimentary administrative services?”

3. “I am writing an article on how to use a VA for your bookkeeping – what do you use a VA for?”

You get the idea, I have done this many times, and I have had quite a few really great leads.

After 20 minutes I want to see what kind of response I’ve had and how many real @reply responses my experiment has generated and even though 20 minutes is not long, remember that Twitter runs at a hectic pace so that is an ideal amount of time for this kind of tweet; you can see from the real life example in the video that I got about 16 altogether and if this is not very clear in the YouTube example, I will generate a screen capture shot to help you see it. I have also tweeted and said thank you to all of these people during this time, so my original tweet is very lost at the back now, so I would advise that you wait a little while and leave your tweet up, before tweeting your “Thank You’s.” I then went on to place them in a Twitter list, and because they are all wonderful, I have put them on my “Awesome Twitter Experiment” list. So, very simply, be yourself, and be honest… Twitter is a social medium and not designed for business, users were responsible for developing it this way, so remember that you shouldn’t market directly, but focus on yourself as a person first and if you are interesting enough people will want to know what you do for a living, or in turn will know someone who might be interested in what you do.
